C1 – Renewable freshwater resources
A key strategic issue.
Characterization of environmental policy context
Ensure efficient water use. the maximum amount of water utilization index not more than 60 percent; environmental discharges in surface aquifers
The main conclusions
Renewable water resources have a pronounced variable regime.
Renewable fresh water resources 2000-2022. the analysis of the time dynamics shows that there is no reduction of the resource.

The EEA uses the following analysis model to classify different environmental indicators: DPSIR (driving force – impact – situation – consequence – actions implemented). In general, the indicator “Renewable freshwater resources” refers to the “situation” category. Some examples of the application of the DPSIR model can be found at:
Application of the DPSIR model in the field of water resources.

The volume of renewable fresh water resources is estimated at the country level and is expressed in million m3. The dynamics of that value is shown on the graph in figure 1. In addition, trends in changes in the index are also analyzed over time.
From the point of view of the average annual values observed in the long-term period, it has small volumes of renewable fresh water per capita (2270m3/person/year, European average: 3500). However, existing resources and the intensity of socio-economic processes are extremely uneven in space and time.

Additional strategic task 1.
Turkey has started building large-scale reservoirs on its territory on the Araks River and its tributaries, which will have a significant impact on the change in inflow volumes.

As can be seen from picture 2, 2000-2022. during the period, the proportion of inflow from neighboring countries in the total volume of renewable fresh water resources is noticeably decreasing.
